Q.
So ... How can they know that...? A. The simple
direct answers are not always satisfying, often raising even more questions. For
our purposes, these issues invariably revolve around the simple, honest question
of; 'How do they know that..?'
I am a true skeptic, so I have chased
down most all of these questions, until I was satisfied. To feel comfortable
about the main topics being discussed, you should also become comfortable with
the basis for those points, and the sources of their conclusions.
The results of
my studies is that nearly all basic research is based upon very well established
methods and firm facts. When we stretch ourselves into the unknown, we often
times have to create new methods to discover those new facts. In the process of
discovery, as careful as we try to be, mistakes arise, get published and become
public humiliations. No scientist wants this to happen to them , so they are
incredibly careful Despite this they are only as good as the basic research
allows them. In computer lingo; GIGO - Garbage In Garbage Out.
Our whole set of concepts for certain
areas can be flawed, and we are likely to find many theories tossed out as new
information and methods developed. So, science is not perfect, but the
fundamental basis for research has gone through enough to give us nearly
absolute confidence in the preliminary steps.
Here you will
find explanation for the basic research and methods, as well as some of the
mistakes and how they have been resolved.
Sub-Sections
Methods of Science - The standards that we use
Refined from centuries of research,
it is only on the fringe areas of exploration that they sometimes make mistakes.
Physical Foundations - The building blocks of the physical world
Most all that makes up the
physical world is known, it when we delve even deeper that questionable areas
arise.
Human Existence - What we know about where we came from
Generally it is easy to know one
thing is older than another, pinpointing exact dates though can be tricky.
Paleontology - Life before humankind
The trail of older leads to even
older, but how do we know it's millions of years rather than thousands?
Beyond the Physical - The philosophical and, the spiritual
We are just one among billions, or we
have a specific connection to a higher power.
